A Short History of Golden Beach, Florida
By design and law a residential community of condo-less,
single-family housing, it is Miami-Dade's northernmost beachfront community
where gated estates protect the mile-long oceanfront sanctuary of homes. With
fewer than 370 houses, there are approximately 919 residents.
Golden Beach is actually one of Miami-Dade's older
municipalities, founded in 1924 as a place devoid of business and devoted to
family life. Islands were dredged, the mangrove swamp was drained, water lines,
bridges and underground electrical conduits were installed.
The killer hurricane of 1926 struck and all South Florida
property values went into an economic depression. It wasn't until 1928 that the
first homes appeared. The town was chartered in 1929 by an act of the
legislature. Many of its early citizens were steel barons from chilly
Pittsburgh. In 1940 and 1941, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt rented a villa here
and escaped from the clamor of Washington.
Public tranquility was disturbed again in 1959 when a pair of
gamblers rented an oceanfront villa and set up a gambling casino. The police
quickly raided the illegal casino and the citizens of Golden Beach went back to sleep on their golden
pillows.
